Malaga v Almeria Preview

Malaga’s tie at high-flying Villarreal last weekend looked to be a good result, especially as it came about thanks to a late goal scored by Sebas Fernandez. But Manuel Pellegrini’s side desperately needs wins to move off the bottom of the table. Malaga, having tied the last three league matches, is still bottom with 20 points, but a win at home to 19th-placed Almeria in Monday’s Andalusian derby will see Pellegrini’s side move up at least one place in the table. Keeper Sergio Asenjo is out for the season, but recent signing Willy Caballero made a promising debut against Villarreal. Javier Portillo is doubtful for the game against Almeria, but Jesus Gamez and Kris could return. Duda and Javier Malagueno are sidelined.

Almeria could only tie 1-1 at home to Deportivo La Coruna last weekend and remains in trouble at the wrong end of the Primera Division.
Jose Luis Oltra’s side had been seconds away from winning that match until a late header from, of all people, Depor goalkeeper Dani Aranzubia deep into added time. With 14 games left, Almeria lies second from bottom, just a point above last-placed Malaga, with the two sides set to meet in an Andalusian derby clash at La Rosaleda on Monday. Winger Albert Crusat is due to return for Almeria, while Carlos Garcia and Juanma Ortiz could also be back from injury. Oltra hopes his side can overcome last weekend’s disappointment. “It hurts to concede a goal like that,” he said. “But we have to forget that now and move on.”
