Mecca Bingo saw customer numbers rise for the first time in a decade as word spread about improvements to games and services, owner Rank Group said yesterday.
The company also saw its Grosvenor Casinos break through the one million customer barrier for the first time as pre-tax profit rose from £24.7million to £25.1million on revenues up from £266million to £281million for the first half to June. Its shares rose 73/4p to 117p.
Rank chief executive Ian Burke said innovations such as meals being served at bingo-goers tables and callers with personalities had helped to drive Mecca’s turnaround. “Aside from our own marketing efforts, we have had some good word of mouth,” he said.
He added bingo had proved resilient to recession because it was a “low ticket” night out. He said the casinos had benefited from “sustained investment” to improve the quality of its estate.
