Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Valencia; the prologue of the Champions League have seen big name teams still short of a victory in their respective groups. As we enter week 3 and the half way point of the group stage it’s time to for the big names to step up!
Following a first round home loss to Trabzonspor, Inter have somewhat managed to limit the damage in group B with a tight 3-2 victory away to CSKA Moscow in the second round. Once again, Tuesday’s early kick off sees CSKA host a surprisingly unbeaten Trabzonspor. The Russians on the other hand will want to take full advantage of this fixture, as they seek their first win, as do Lille who host Inter. Lille will have to deal with the Italian club, eager for the first place in the group.
With two wins and no goals conceded, in-form Olympique Marseille occupy first place in Group F. They will not want to get too comfortable however as they host an Arsenal side who have never lost away to a French club. Despite their strong start to the Champions League campaign, Marseille haven’t been doing too well in the domestic French league with only 1 win in 9 matches.
Villarreal are looking to avoid a third successive Group A defeat when they visit Manchester City, who are also determined to make up lost ground. Roberto Mancini’s side is still seeking a first victory in the group after drawing at home to Napoli and a subsequent defeat at the hands of Bayern München. City are determined to justify their summer signings and reach the last 16 group stages.
